The Nissan GT-R R35 has never been an understated machine. Heavy, devastatingly powerful, and equipped with a complex twin-turbocharged all-wheel-drive system, it was engineered from factory to translate massive force into forward motion with incredible efficiency. However, when pushed through consecutive hard stints on a circuit, priorities rapidly shift. Peak power is meaningless without temperature control, pedal consistency, fluid stability, and repeatable dynamic behavior.
This white GT-R R35 arrived at ATOMIC-SHOP with a singular directive: transform a heavy road car into a relentless, thermally resilient track platform. We bypassed cosmetic trends and single-lap dyno figures to overhaul the systems subject to extreme thermal stress—the GR6 dual-clutch transaxle, VR38DETT fuel and exhaust routing, brake friction materials, suspension kinematics, and driver ergonomics.
The end result is an unyielding R35 circuit package engineered using proven motorsport components from HKS, DODSON, PFC, APR, ADVAN, MICHELIN, SWIFT, and RED LINE OIL.

The Circuit Challenge: Managing Thermal and Kinetic Mass
In factory trim, the R35 GT-R delivers shocking acceleration. Yet with a curb weight hovering around 1,700 kg combined with twin turbochargers, all-wheel-drive friction, and a rear-mounted GR6 transaxle, sustained track driving generates immense thermal loads across every mechanical system.
Street driving allows components ample time to shed heat. On circuit, continuous full-throttle sweeps, heavy braking zones, and extreme lateral g-forces rapidly saturate factory heat exchangers. Transmission fluid temperatures spike, engine bay heat causes power-sapping timing retard, brakes absorb massive kinetic energy, and tires struggle under high chassis mass.
Our focus for this build was not simply adding horsepower—it was engineering total mechanical endurance.
GR6 Transaxle Optimization: HKS, ARD, and DODSON Upgrades
The GR6 dual-clutch transaxle is the most thermally sensitive component on a track-driven R35 GT-R. Under continuous high-load shifts, transmission oil temperatures quickly rise toward critical thresholds, triggering factory protection modes that cut engine output to preserve the gearset.
To eliminate thermal bottlenecks, we installed an high-efficiency HKS DCT Cooler Kit. By increasing fluid volume and expanding external cooling capacity, this system stabilizes GR6 operating temperatures during extended hot laps.
To reinforce internal fluid dynamics and physical durability, the transaxle was outfitted with an high-capacity ARD Transmission Oil Pan and a suite of DODSON hardware, including an anti-surge plate, upgraded pan filter, differential air scoop, and heavy-duty input shaft seals. This combination prevents oil starvation under severe lateral loads while protecting the drivetrain from fluid degradation.
VR38DETT Fuel Delivery, Exhaust Flow, and Heat Shielding
Nissan's VR38DETT V6 provides an exceptional tuning foundation, but maintaining stable air-fuel ratios and lowering exhaust backpressure is vital for track longevity.
To prevent lean conditions under high boost and sustained wide-open throttle, we upgraded the fueling architecture with high-flow Walbro fuel pumps and precision ID1000cc injectors. This setup provides uninterrupted, high-volume fuel delivery across the entire RPM range.
Exhaust gas evacuation and thermal relief were drastically improved by replacing restrictive OEM downpipes with high-flow ARD Down-pipes feeding into a free-flowing HKS Legamax exhaust system. This pairing significantly reduces turbine backpressure and lowers exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs) while delivering a commanding, deep exhaust note.
Ignition fidelity is maintained via colder-grade HKS spark plugs. To safeguard surrounding engine bay components, sensitive lines and wire harnesses were wrapped in THERMO-TEC heat sleeving and secured with thermal-reflective DEI Quick Fix Tape.
Endurance Braking Package: PFC, DODSON, and PAGID RACING
Decelerating a 1,700 kg vehicle from triple-digit speeds lap after lap requires an uncompromising braking package. The primary goal for this build was eliminating brake fade, ensuring solid pedal travel, and maximizing friction predictability.
On the front axle, we installed floating 2-piece PFC V3 brake discs paired with endurance-spec PFC 08 compound race pads. Renowned for exceptional wear characteristics and flat torque curves, the 08 compound provides immediate initial bite and precise modulation under extreme temperatures.
The rear axle mirrors this setup with matching PFC replacement rotors and PFC 08 rear pads, delivering balanced front-to-rear deceleration characteristics.
Operating temperatures were further suppressed using a DODSON R35 Brake Cooling Kit, which channels high-velocity airflow directly to the rotor centers. The entire hydraulic system was flushed with ultra-high-boiling-point PAGID RACING Brake Fluid to prevent vapor lock during long stints.
Rotational Mass and Contact Patch: ADVAN GT, Michelin Cup 2, and Swift
Unsprung weight reduction directly enhances damper reaction, steering communication, and overall grip levels on a heavy AWD platform.
We replaced the OEM wheels with ultra-lightweight forged ADVAN GT Premium monoblock wheels in Racing Titanium Blue (20x10 ET35 front / 20x12 ET20 rear). Shedding rotational mass at all four corners noticeably sharpens turn-in response and reduces damper work.
The wheels are shod in ultra-sticky MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires in a staggered 285/35 R20 front and 325/30 R20 rear configuration, providing enormous mechanical lateral grip. Wheel security is handled by lightweight forged MUTEKI SR45R steel lug nuts.
Chassis dynamics were tightened using SWIFT Springs Sport Spec R lowering springs. By lowering the center of gravity and increasing spring stiffness, body roll, pitch, and dive are minimized without disrupting the factory electronic damper settings.

Aerodynamic Balance: APR and Stillen
High-speed track stability requires balanced downforce to keep the rear axle planted through fast sweepers and heavy braking zones.
Rear stability is managed by an adjustable carbon fiber APR Performance rear wing, providing functional downforce at speed. The front profile and side air management are enhanced via a STILLEN front lip spoiler and matching side skirt extension set, smoothing underbody airflow and stabilizing the front axle.

Cockpit Support and Safety Hardware
To keep the driver anchored securely without fighting g-forces through the steering wheel, the factory front seats were swapped for supportive RECARO Pole Position fixed-back bucket seats in black velour.
Mounted using custom low-profile ATOMIC seat brackets, the setup lowers the driving position for improved center of gravity and tactile chassis feel. A lightweight 2 kg aluminum OMP fire extinguisher was securely mounted within reach to meet essential track-day safety protocols.
Verdict: Engineered for Continuous Lap Consistency
This Nissan GT-R R35 build highlights the importance of functional engineering over headline horsepower figures. By systematically eliminating factory thermal limitations, upgrading mechanical friction, and stabilizing drivetrain hydraulics, ATOMIC-SHOP created a GT-R capable of running hard, repeatable lap times with absolute confidence.
