The MITSUBISHI Lancer Evolution VI RSII represents a golden era of mechanical performance. Built around the lightweight CP9A platform, the iconic 4G63T engine, and a permanent mechanical all-wheel-drive system, it hails from a period when lap times were earned through raw mechanical grip, boost management, and direct chassis feedback.
Drawn from the ATOMIC-SHOP project archive, this silver EVO VI RSII reflects the core tuning philosophy of two decades ago—an era when speed was dictated purely by hardware rather than electronic driver aids. Looking back at this build proves a crucial point: purpose-driven mechanical engineering never goes out of style.
Rather than diluting the rally-bred character of the Lancer Evolution VI, our objective was to reinforce its core strengths using time-tested components: faster turbo spool, efficient charge-air cooling, precision damping, flatter cornering, fade-resistant braking, and an uncompromised driving position.
Power & Thermal Efficiency: EVO9 Turbocharger and HKS Hardware
The 4G63T powerplant is one of the most capable turbocharged four-cylinders ever manufactured. Its cast-iron block, robust internal geometry, and massive tuning headroom made it the ultimate canvas for a track-focused EVO VI build.
To optimize airflow without sacrificing low-end response, the factory turbo was replaced with an EVO9 Turbocharger. This OEM-plus upgrade path offered the engine higher airflow capacity and stronger top-end power while maintaining immediate spool out of corners.
To manage intake air temperatures during continuous high-load sessions, we installed an HKS Intercooler. Lowering charge temperatures protects the engine from heat soak and ignition timing retard during repeated hot laps.
Exhaust gas evacuation is handled by an HKS Hi-Power Silent Exhaust. This system minimizes backpressure to improve turbine efficiency, producing a deep, refined JDM exhaust note that stays true to the car's period-correct identity.
Chassis Kinematics: ÖHLINS DFV and CUSCO Integration
In stock trim, the EVO VI chassis delivers aggressive turn-in and compliant rally-style suspension stroke. However, track driving demands tighter body control and faster damper recovery over kerbs.
We upgraded the suspension using an ÖHLINS MIS MI01 Road & Track DFV Damper Kit. Originally engineered for the later EVO VII-IX platform, we retrofitted this high-spec damper setup onto the CP9A chassis using the ÖHLINS MIZ MI00 Adaption Kit.
This cross-generational integration brought ÖHLINS Dual Flow Valve (DFV) technology to the early chassis. The DFV valving maintains tire contact across harsh pavement imperfections, providing exceptional stability under heavy braking and high-speed corner entries.
To reduce lateral body roll, we added front and rear CUSCO Sway Bars. Tying the front and rear axles together creates a flatter cornering platform, allowing the mechanical AWD system to deploy power more effectively.
Braking System: DBA Discs and ENDLESS MX72 Friction
Increased power and higher cornering speeds require a braking system capable of handling extreme thermal cycles without losing pedal consistency.
The friction setup was upgraded with high-carbon DBA Brake Discs. Known for superior heat dissipation and structural stability under thermal stress, these discs provided the ideal foundation for track use.
We paired the rotors with ENDLESS MX72 Brake Pads. This street-and-circuit compound offers strong initial bite, linear pedal modulation, and excellent resistance to thermal fade over continuous hot laps.
Cockpit Ergonomics: Direct Control with OMP
The driving environment of the EVO VI RSII is strictly functional. To maximize steering communication and driver engagement, cockpit upgrades focused purely on tactile control.
The factory steering wheel was swapped for an OMP OD0-1956-073 Corsica 350mm Steering Wheel in black and red suede. Its deep dish profile and high-grip suede finish ensure positive steering input during rapid directional changes.
To perfect the driving position, we installed a custom Steering Wheel Spacer. Bringing the wheel closer to the driver improves arm leverage, reduces shoulder fatigue, and sharpens response times when catching mid-corner slides.
Verdict: Timeless Mechanical Harmony
This silver MITSUBISHI Lancer Evolution VI RSII stands as a testament to the golden era of analog tuning. Every modification on this ATOMIC-SHOP build served a distinct mechanical purpose rather than chasing superficial trends.
The EVO9 Turbocharger and HKS cooling components unlocked broad, repeatable power. Retrofitted ÖHLINS DFV dampers and CUSCO sway bars transformed chassis dynamics, while DBA discs and ENDLESS MX72 friction provided unyielding brake consistency. Finished with an OMP steering setup, this EVO VI RSII remains a sharp, direct, and deeply rewarding driver's car two decades on.
