BMW M2 Competition F87: Engineering a Purpose-Built Track Instrument

The BMW M2 Competition F87 remains one of the most compelling modern performance platforms. Featuring a compact wheelbase, rear-wheel-drive dynamics, and the twin-turbocharged S55 engine, it leaves the factory with undeniable potential.

However, push a stock M2 Competition to its limits on circuit and OEM trade-offs quickly surface. Built primarily to balance daily road compliance with spirited driving, the factory setup suffers from heat management issues, soft suspension kinematics, braking fade, and excess weight once lap times become the priority.

At ATOMIC-SHOP, our objective for this F87 build was not chasing arbitrary dyno figures. Instead, we set out to build a razor-sharp, thermal-efficient, and telepathically predictable track machine designed for repeated circuit abuse.

The resulting package integrates high-performance hardware from TTE, GARRETT, EVENTURI, AKRAPOVIČ, ÖHLINS, MILLWAY, ATOMIC BBK, RECARO, and ARD.

Power & Thermal Management: TTE740+, GARRETT, EVENTURI, and AKRAPOVIČ

The S55 engine provides an exceptional baseline with strong low-end torque and high tuning headroom. For this build, however, raw power was useless without absolute thermal stability and linear delivery across demanding stint sessions.

To safely increase airflow headroom at high RPM, the stock turbochargers were swapped for TTE SW10076.1 TTE740+ Upgrade Turbochargers. This allows the S55 to sustain boost higher in the rev range without pushing the turbos outside their efficiency window—essential for keeping output manageable on a short-wheelbase chassis.

To combat heat soak during consecutive hot laps, charge air cooling was overhauled using a high-efficiency GARRETT intercooler. Lowering intake air temperatures prevents the ECU from pulling ignition timing, ensuring flat, predictable power delivery from corner entry to exit.

Induction is handled by the EVENTURI EVE-M2C-CF-INT Carbon Intake System. Beyond its visual craftsmanship, the sealed carbon Venturi housings and optimized inlet paths deliver smoother laminar airflow while shielding intake air from engine bay heat.

Exhaust gas evacuation is optimized via an AKRAPOVIČ S-BM/T/3H Slip-On Line Titanium combined with the AKRAPOVIČ E-BM/T/5 Evolution Link Pipe Set Titanium. This setup reduces unsprung mass at the rear axle, significantly lowers backpressure, and yields an authentic motorsport acoustic profile.

Note: Depending on regional emission standards and OPF/GPF setups, installing the Evolution Link Pipe requires custom ECU calibration and may alter street-legality.

Drivetrain protection is reinforced with a motorsport-spec BMW Motorsport differential cooling assembly to maintain rear axle lubricant integrity under continuous heavy loads. All fluid channels were upgraded to track-grade chemistry using RED LINE OIL 5W50 Motor Oil, RED LINE OIL 75W140 GL-5 Gear Oil, and RED LINE OIL WaterWetter.

Chassis & Alignment Control: ÖHLINS, EIBACH, and MILLWAY

Straight-line speed is irrelevant without chassis control. While stock damping handles street bumps adequately, high-grip semi-slicks and high lateral loads expose soft factory spring rates and compliant rubber bushings.

Damping is managed by an ÖHLINS BMS MR40 Road & Track DFV setup, re-valved and paired with a custom EIBACH motorsport spring package (140 N/mm primary springs with 26 N/mm tenders). This configuration locks down pitch, roll, and transient weight transfers across high-speed kerb strikes.

To maximize front-end traction, we installed adjustable MILLWAY Camber Plates. Achieving optimized negative camber angles eliminates outer tire shoulder scrubbing, increases contact patch efficiency under load, and sharpens turn-in precision dramatically.

Rotational Mass & Contact Patch: BBS, APEX, and Michelin

Minimizing unsprung rotational mass directly improves suspension tracking and steering fidelity. On a reactive, short-wheelbase chassis like the F87, lightweight wheels transform dynamic feedback under braking and corner entry.

Depending on circuit conditions, the car operates on forged monoblock BBS FI137 / FI138 wheels (19x9.5 front / 19x10.5 rear) or lightweight APEX EC-7 wheels in 19x9.5 / 19x11 Race Silver finish.

Tire options vary between MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect semi-slicks for maximum dry-track performance and MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tires for wet or mixed road conditions.

Wheel spacing and track width adjustments are fine-tuned using EIBACH Pro-Spacers, while wheel swaps are streamlined with heavy-duty A.I.TECH stud and nut conversions.

Braking System: ATOMIC BBK, AP RACING CP9668, and PFC Friction

Sustained lap pace requires an unyielding brake setup. As corner entry speeds rise, OEM cast calipers and street friction compounds quickly overheat.

We engineered a tailored ATOMIC BBK built around forged 6-piston AP RACING CP9668 Radi-CAL calipers. Paired with high-thermal-capacity 378x35 mm PFC replacement brake rotors and aggressive PFC 331 compound race pads, this system delivers relentless stopping power, rapid heat dissipation, and effortless pad swaps.

Brake pedal compliance is eliminated using FISCHER and BMW OEM Stainless Steel Brake Line Kits, flushed with high-boiling-point PFC RH665 Racing Brake Fluid. The result is concrete pedal feel and repeatable braking points meter after meter.

Cockpit, Safety, and Driver Ergonomics

Driver control is just as vital as mechanical grip. Removing internal body flex and securing the driver allows for far more precise inputs at the limit.

The rear seat assembly was removed to accommodate an ARD 4-Point Roll Cage and an ARD Rear Seat Delete Carpet, stiffening the rear chassis structure while trimming interior weight.

Driver and passenger are locked into fixed-back RECARO Pole Position Seats anchored by SCHROTH PROFI II-FE ASM 4-Point Harnesses and a SCHROTH T-Bar Crutch Strap. This holds the driver securely in place, freeing hands and legs purely for steering and pedal modulation.

Tactile control is upgraded via AUTOTECKNIC Competition Steering Shift Levers and high-visibility AUTOTECKNIC Red M1/M2 Buttons.

Aero & Carbon Bodywork

Exterior modifications were executed purely for weight reduction and high-speed stability rather than visual showmanship.

Front axle load distribution is optimized with a lightweight BMW OEM Carbon Hood. Rear stability and clean detachment are supported by a BMW OEM M Performance Carbon Rear Trunk Spoiler and a matte-finish AKRAPOVIČ Rear Carbon Fiber Diffuser. The exterior profile is completed with AKRAPOVIČ Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps.
